World Wide Day Of Play Empty World Wide Day Of Play

Post by Riordon Wed May 03, 2017 3:57 pm

In "The Huxleyan Warning," Postman talks about Connecticut having that TV turn off event one year. I'm still not sure if it was once a year for a month or once a month for a day? The wording in the article is inconsistent on that. But, it immediately reminded me of years ago Nickelodeon had that World Wide Day Of Play thing where if you went to watch Nick it was just a picture of kids outside and had something like "go out and have fun!" written on it. And all I remember from that was I would just change the channel to Cartoon Network.

So the question is: did your family ever have times when the TV had to be off? Wether it was a day in a week or a few hours in a day. Do you think you were better off for having it, or worse off if you hadn't?

World Wide Day Of Play Empty My perception on Day Of Play

Post by Calvin123 Wed May 03, 2017 10:11 pm

Growing up with lenient parents they didn't really cared what i did as long as I was happy. Yet they still cared at the same time of putting effort and taking me outside to play some ball or just exploring. Now listening to others and seeing the benefit of things, similar to the Day of Play on Nickelodeon, actually influenced me to go outside and play. I believe having best of both worlds is good because both has its pros and cons and both have lessons that can be learn.

When I was younger I didn't have cable television for a really long time. Basically the only shows I watched were on pbs, but my parents never explicitly had times where I had to turn off the TV. I think it was ultimately a good thing because I could survive without needing a constant source on entertainment

We could really only watch Disney on Sunday night when I was a young'un. Now, I encourage parents/guardians/those who love you to (1) move any media out of your bedroom (it confuses place to work with place to sleep); (2) take your mobile devices from you when you go to bed; and (3) to have you go play outside, exercise, do something physical. I think it's crucial for brain development, too.

World Wide Day Of Play Empty Tv

Post by Private1stClasChristensen Tue May 09, 2017 8:18 am

My sisters and I always had tv on when we grew up. Between watching it at night time with the family or cartoons in the morning on Saturday it was never an issue. I remember in elementary school we would walk home and when we arrived watching an hour or two of television before my parents got home. It's been a staple as well as watching sporting events and movies with my parents, they never really made it a point to not watch tv. As for the nickelodeon world wide day of play, I always switched it to Disney Channel instead and rocked me some Hannah Montana.

World Wide Day Of Play Empty Internet any Different?

Post by Admin Tue May 09, 2017 12:51 pm

Love Hannah Montana[u]! We all grew up on TV, I suppose. And, I suppose, we are oblivious the the impact it has had on us. Do you think, Private, that the Internet is any different? - My-Tai

Younger I was always encouraged to go outside but was always had the chance to watch tv when I wanted. Very impatient and fidgety kid I couldn't find myself watching tv for more than an hour.

But I do have a question, on the day of play who actually listened and went to play or did you merely just change the channel?

Do you find yourself, Isaac, losing focus when on the Internet/social media?

Constantly, almost every time that I browse the internet there is always something to open in a new tab and to take a look at. because of this my attention span on the internet is very low. If something doesn't capture my attention very quickly then I move on to the next thing. I am pretty sure that I am not alone on this one too, do you Mr. Myette find yourself constantly opening multiple websites but not putting much thought into the websites at all.

The only time that I can sit still and spend time on the internet for a while is when I find a long youtube video that has captured my attention or just playing a video game withe some friends.

Yes, Isaac, constantly! As Carr points up, the Internet is structured to ensure that we are distracted!
