Chapter 12 Analysis
After the events of chapter 11, Bernard seemingly finally becomes somewhat self aware of the way he acted once his fame went to his head. Because of this, he returns to Helmholtz and apologizes, asking for forgiveness, and is pleased, yet spiteful that Helmholtz simply gives him his friendship back without acknowledging the way he acted before. Bernard also begins to resent John, using him as something of a scapegoat for his problems. Bernard also continues to exploit John for his own purposes, showing that despite his recognition of the way he acted before, he really hasn't changed at all.
